Landmark Group Marks World Diabetes Day with Community Awareness Activities
Press Release
November 15, 2011
Landmark Group, the region's leading retail and hospitality conglomerate and the force behind the 'Beat Diabetes' campaign, today hosted a range of activities in the run-up to its annual walkathon to commemorate the World Diabetes Day.

Lit in blue, the Oasis Centre joined a thousand buildings worldwide as part of a global monument challenge led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). To mark the occasion, families were invited to visit the Oasis Centre dressed in blue. The Landmark Group conducted free blood glucose testing for shoppers, which will be extended over the weekend of 18 and 19 November at the Oasis Centre.

A drawing competition organised by Fun City required children to creatively depict the 'blue circle' logo, the global symbol for diabetes, using an assorted collection of paints and craft material. Prizes included gifts from Fun City and Babyshop, in addition to a chance to meet the legendary cricketer Wasim Akram at the Beat Diabetes walkathon.

Renuka Jagtiani, Vice - Chairperson, Landmark Group, said: "With the UAE recording one of the highest prevalence of diabetes in the world, knowledge among people is important. Sedentary lifestyle is one of the main causes behind the condition and through such events that engage the young the Group reaches out to parents to spread awareness about the significance of healthy eating and exercise for their children."

"Last year over 7,500 people joined us for the walk in Dubai. This year we have already received tremendous response for the walk registrations that opened in Oasis Centre, Dubai and across Centrepoint, Home Centre, Max and Fitness First outlets in the UAE starting November 10."

With a belief that creating awareness is crucial to the control of diabetes, the Landmark Group continues to implement round-the-year activities to beat diabetes. In 2010, the walkathon attracted over 25,000 people, while more than 30,000 individuals were administered free blood glucose test across six countries. This year the campaign has received overwhelming response and the numbers are expected to be higher.
